Andrè Volten
Kubusconstructie

André Volten is one of the main Dutch sculptor of the generation after 1945. He was born in Andijk in 1945 and followed a short course in Amsterdam at the Institute for Art Education, but left in 1946 before a period of 4 years to Brussels. There he quickly developed his interest in abstract art. After his return to Amsterdam in 1950 he became a non-figurative sculptor. After 1954, the year in which he was co-founder of the artist group ‘Liga Nieuwe Beelden’, Volten belonged to the group of sculptors, which was involved in the role of art in public spaces. This resulted in many con- structivist sculptures in many cities in the Netherlands and beyond. The work of Volten contributed significantly to the integration of art in public space. In 1996 Volten got the major Oeuvre Award of the Fund for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture. The strict abstract-geometric metal Cube Construction by André Volten is a good example of a monumental sculpture that communicates with architecture and urban design. Cube construction belongs to Voltens rare free work. It has been said that the pulse of De Stijl can be felt in this work.
