The Stichting ARTZUID foundation is a cultural organisation established in 2008 by Cintha van Heeswijck-Veeger (director) with the aim of organising a world-class biennial sculpture exhibition in the monumental Plan-Zuid urban area of Amsterdam designed by architect H.P. Berlage. The foundation’s initial aim was to liven up the neighbourhood by exhibiting modern and contemporary sculptures on Apollolaan, Minervalaan and the Zuidas business district, but in recent years it has grown to become the largest free art event in the Netherlands.
In 2013 ARTZUID was voted ‘best neighbourhood initiative’ by Amsterdam residents in the Oranje Fonds Kroonappels awards. In 2015 the exhibition was opened by HRH Princess Beatrix.
Over the past 10 years 250 artists have been able to present a total of 350 artworks and 45,000 schoolchildren from Amsterdam and the surrounding area have taken part in the educational programme. During the four months it is in place the sculpture route attracts an average of 375,000 visitors. With international participants such as Tony Cragg, Eduardo Chillida, Mario Merz, Antony Gormley, Jaume Plensa, El Anatsui, KAWS and Atelier Van Lieshout the exhibition has become an important international sculpture podium. The artists for the previous editions were selected by leading curators such as Michiel Romeyn and Roberto Meyer, Henk van Os, Rudi Fuchs and Maarten Bertheux.
The sculpture route for this edition will be composed by Cintha van Heeswijck-Veeger in collaboration with Jhim Lamoree and Michiel Romeyn.
The Stichting Art Zuid foundation aims to finance the ARTZUID exhibition, educational programme and peripheral programming 1/3 from cultural funds, 1/3 from business and private sponsors and 1/3 from visitor revenues. In addition the foundation relies to a large extent on the hard work and commitment of 100 loyal neighbourhood volunteers.
