SCULPTURE ROUTE 2009 ARTZUID

International sculpture route Amsterdam-South:
‘ArtZuid 2009: Modelled on Berlage’

Architect Roberto Meyer and artist Michiel Romeyn have chosen for a surprising combination of sculptures for the Apollo- and the Minervalaan this summer. Beside international classics as Rodin and Zadkine, they will present works of talked-about artists as Paul McCarthy, Joep van Lieshout, Franz West, Panamarenko, and Tajiri. Young Dutch talent has been selected especially to manufacture work for this route. The pieces do not represent an art-historical tale, nor can be categorised under one common theme or one sociopolitical issue. A conscious decision was made to let Romeyn and Meyer create a non-conformist personal canon that reflects this exhibition. Centrally stands that the individual pictures optimally convey the spatial surroundings of Berlage’s design. Hence the name `Berlage in Beeld'.

During the 1980s as a student Michiel Romeyn initiated the establishment of the audiovisual department within the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Michiel Romeyn is one fo the creators of the popular television programme Jiskefet, www.oboema.tv. Beside producer and actor Romeyn is a photographer and visual artist. Romeyn grew up in Amsterdam South and went to the Montessorischool, which stood then in the middle of the Apollolaan. Michiel Romeyn is known as an non-conformist, with a sharp sense of humour, with which he acerbically examines the social undercurrents of the Dutch society.

Roberto Meyer of Meyer and Van Schooten Architects, www.meyer-vanschooten.nl. received  the Prix de Rome Architecture, the largest and most oldest national award for artists and architects up to 35 years in the Netherlands at the Rijksakademie of fine arts in Amsterdam in 1990. Its office, Meyer and Van Schooten, is known for the revolutionary design of ING-headquarters, located along the A10 highway in Amsterdam. Meyer and Romeyn focus on the design of the sculpture route.
